7th Feb - 1st day Ko Pang Yang

Saturday 7th
Looonnngggg coach and ferries. Didn't get a wink of sleep (seeing a pattern here?!) and very cramped but that was probably because I wanted all my valuables with me in my backpack rather than in the hold (after the scare stories I had read of thieving), and also had bought a few beers for the journey! Was suprised quite a tame bunch, everyone just wanted to sleep. The young austrailan guy sitting in front of me decided to put his seat back literally from the start (7pm) which was ridiculous! Downloaded some photos although havn't had time yet to connect to a wireless. The boat lasted a long time and I felt sick and got drenched form spray! Arrived at 1am at 'chocolate bungalows' on the north end of Haad Yao beach which is on the north-west coast of Kho Phang Yang. Not on the beach but a five minute walk. Hammock outside but not much view. Small room, literally the size of a double bed and have to get through the shower to the loo! But serves its purpose, has its own Thai charm, cold shower but not a problem in this heat 30 baht each a night, oh the wide bed had a mosquito net, and nice firm mattress which I like.
It's very expensive here for Thai standards or even england considering wine is 10 quid to buy in the shop (but its not a 7/11). Had shower and headed down to the beach. Wandered around to see what food prices were like. We had a lovely meal at a beach front hotel (110 baht for lovely spagetti cabonara and orange juice.) Starting to read 'Twilight' by Stephanie Meyer whioch the girls have been raving about - a love affair between a girl and a vampire! Bought mosquito coils see if thats helps my bites! Ah yes the little blighters have not wasted any time. Its not malaria region here although all the other girls are on anti-malarials just in case!
I actually cat napped for about an hour on the beach this afternoon - as I had gone through the night with no sleep. I woke up feeling very refreshed if not a little confused at my surroundings! We took a walk along the beach and headed back.
We ventured out again after a nice shower, and after Emily took a tumble down the steep steps approaching our accomodations and we helped clean her up we went for some food on the beach. It was a lovely chilled place - I think this beach caters more for families as it has a gently sloping beach and many people around us do not seem to be English which is nice - seems less commercialised. The locals still try and get us to eat in their bars or restaurants but in a more firendly way than what I have experienced in say Turkey. I ate a nice beef steak with chips and mushrooms which was very very nice and had a glass of red wine which unfortunately smelled - and tasted - of vinegar. Literally. It wasnt too bad however with a bit of an addition of sprite, (thanks Emily!) and we went to expore other bars. I had noticed a high rooftop bar which the girls were up for going to and it was a good choice. Very chilled ambience, lovely chinese style laterns and some bob marley music suited the low level cushions for reclining and shilling. We played the drinking game '21' with a bucket of very strong 'Sangsom' - a combination of Thai whiskey mixed with red bull and sprite - with an entire bottle of whiskey! Despite the best intentions, we only half finished it but wandered home sleepy but happy and contented looking foward to another relaxing day tomorrow.
The plan is then Monday we will rent mopeds so will read my lonely planet tomorrow to see what is worth visiting on the island. We actually found out the full moon party is 10th not 9th and a taxi both ways is 7 pound per person which is really expensive by Thai standars. They rent mopeds out for 200 baht.
Money spent 110 lunch (spaghetti cabonara and fresh orange juice), 105 nibbles (biscuits) and drinks, 370 evening food (steak and wine!), 70 baht for a bucket. TOTAL = 665 / 13.10)
Most thankfull thing: Left my camera at ferry dock but a kind aussie returned it to me just in time!
Worst thing: Absolutely no sleep on overnight coach, very crampled and felt sea sick on ferry!
Best thing: The beach! Arriving and having food with lovely sea views.
